Spanish Montería: Tradition, regulations and best practices

What is montería?

Unique in the world, montería is one of the most traditional and popular hunting modalities in Spain. It is an activity that consists of the release of rehalas, dogs that move through the terrain (called Mancha) picking up and chasing cattle, such as wild boar, deer, fallow deer or roe deer. On the other hand, a group of hunters, who are distributed over the terrain forming a series of lines, called armadas, must shoot down the permitted animals.

Overall, it is one of the quickest and most efficient ways to manage overpopulation in a preserve.

Traditions

Montería has a long tradition in Spain, dating back to the Middle Ages. At that time, hunting was an activity reserved for the nobility and rich landowners. However, as time has passed, it has become a more popular and accessible activity for all hunters.

The Spanish montería is characterized by its strong traditions and there are a series of rules and customs that must be respected by all participants in the montería.

Regulations

Hunting is regulated by a series of regulations, which vary depending on the autonomous community. In general, these regulations establish the maximum number of hunters that can participate in a hunt, the type of weapons that can be used and the species that can be hunted.

Better practices

To enjoy a safe and satisfactory hunt, it is important to follow a series of good practices. Among these practices are:

  • Respect the traditions and rules of hunting.
  • Bury the bullet.
  • Do not throw openly.
  • Use appropriate weapons and ammunition.
  • Know the terrain where the hunting will be carried out.
  • Know where the other hunters in your army are located.
  • Collaborate with other participants.
  • Take hunting out of the bush.
