End of a great season
The hunting season has once again been a resounding success throughout the Spanish territory. It has provided incredible moments, exchange of friends, sets and great experiences. That is why it is the queen modality of big game hunting in the country, and more and more young people are joining it. In this video from the “Rediscovering Hunting” camp, you can see that the future of hunting is secure.
Not only young people have revolutionized the hunting activity this season, there are many women who have joined this hobby. They have achieved great achievements such as the case of Alba López, the first female falconry champion in Spain. Hunting has also been organized such as the one in Cea (Ourense), in homage to women hunters, or the Oliva de Mérida (Toledo), in which 22 stalls and 7 female rehalas participated.
A season of trophies
Below we will make a compilation of five large sets that have taken place in the hunts this season.
1. Wild boar with a 34-centimeter tusk
This wild boar was shot in Girona, in a hunt at the beginning of the season, by the young Catalan hunter Robert Boris. The animal did not have grinders, a common case due to the size of the tusk, which even dug into the skull.
The raid was made up of 22 posts and 5 rehals and the specimen was shot down by a Browning MK3 fiber rifle with 184-grain RWS EVO ammunition.
2. Old Pyrenean wild boar
This specimen was shot down in Huesca, in a hunt in which the set was very fast. The animal weighed 115 kilos and had majestic defenses. The hunter Jordi Carrasco affirms: “I shot the animal for the first time in the shoulder, but it was a little under the shot, and then the dogs finished catching it and I finished it off with a knife. It was a very intense set for the animal that it was”.
The set was carried out with a Blaser R93 rifle in 7mm Remington Magnum caliber loaded with 165 grain Geko ammunition.
3. Gold medal wild boar
This pig was shot by David Mansito the day the hunter released his 9.3x 74 caliber Heym express rifle. The set took place in a hunt in Álava and has achieved a score of 123.5, which makes it a gold medal and one of the largest wild boars killed in the Basque Country since records began.
4. 200 point deer
The 17-pointed deer was killed by the occupant of post 9 of the La Cadena army thanks to the dogs of the Gringo's rehala. The specimen was hunted on a farm in Albacete.
5. An unusual horn
Juan Luis Prados got hold of this strange specimen of 17-point deer on a Cordoba farm. It is a unique trophy, since it appears to have three horns, although it really is not. One of them is divided in two, with one part branching back and ending in a palm. The hunter used a Merkel Helix rifle in 300 Winchester Magnum caliber loaded with 180 grain Norma ammunition.
The season ends in many Autonomous Communities, but Asturias and Aragón are the great exception. This year, the wild boar hunting season will be extended throughout March to curb overpopulation. The Regional Hunting Council has made this decision due to the prejudices that its increase in specimens generates in biodiversity and road safety (we tell you about its problems in this blog) .
Not only Asturias, Aragon has also requested the extension of the hunting of wild boar in stalking, beaten and jumping. Due to the 700 accidents that it has caused only in the province of Huesca.
