Who are we?

Calzados Bestard is a family business in the best sense of the word. From the small workshop founded by our grandfather in 1940, we have grown and evolved to become a well-established and recognized company, both in Spain and internationally. We originally started making custom-made men's footwear, and in the 1970s, we specialized in mountain footwear. We currently sell in more than 30 countries around the world.

We're very proud of having gotten to where we are today, but we've never lost that feeling of being part of a family, of being a team strongly united by the excitement and satisfaction of working together on something we all enjoy: perfecting and manufacturing an ever-better mountain boot, a boot that you'll love as much as we do.

To this small family that we are, we are also very fortunate to be able to add the large family that includes all the people with whom we have the privilege of working: our colleagues, our suppliers, our expert advisors, the mountaineering expeditions that go out wearing our boots, our customers, and people like you: all lovers of nature and high-quality technical products, excited, interested, curious people eager to reach ever higher peaks.

Where are we?

Bestard was founded in 1940 in the small town of Lloseta on the island of Mallorca, where we still maintain our factory and much of our production. Located at the foot of the Serra de Tramuntana mountains, Lloseta has always been, like other towns in the area, a municipality bustling with artisanal manufacturing of high-quality footwear. Over the years, many factories have closed, and today, unfortunately, only a few remain. Twenty years ago, when the European hiking boot industry began to relocate to lower-wage countries, we made a firm decision to continue working here in our own factory… out of passion and pride in being able to pursue our own way of working here in our own land, with the people and families who have always been with us, and thus maintain the spirit of a family business rooted here in Mallorca. We also love the surroundings of our factory for the many possibilities for mountain and outdoor activities it offers. Here in the Serra de Tramuntana, we, along with our testers, friends, and users, are just a stone's throw away from excellent places for trekking, hiking, climbing, canyoning, trail running, mountain biking, coasteering, caving, and much more.

Manufacturing Policy

Due to the widespread outsourcing of manufacturing from Europe to countries with lower labor costs, many people tend to associate footwear manufacturing with poor working conditions. This is not the case with Bestard. Bestard is a traditional family business that believes in the value of skilled labor and that our employees are the backbone of the company. Therefore, we are proud to maintain the manufacturing of our products in the European Union, where factors such as the following are protected and guaranteed by law:

  • Employment is freely chosen
  • There is no discrimination in employment
  • Without the use of child labor
  • Freedom of association and the right to collective bargaining
  • Payment of a living wage
  • Regulated working hours
  • Safe and healthy working conditions
  • Legally binding employment relationship

Therefore, you can be sure that your Bestard shoes have been manufactured by qualified workers and under good working conditions, in accordance with our values and guaranteed by European Union labor laws.

Our work philosophy has always been to make hiking boots with the highest possible level of quality and technology, combining our expertise in quality footwear manufacturing with constant development and the incorporation of new and innovative materials, technologies, and designs. Our definition of a quality technical boot has two distinct but equally important dimensions:

  • Made with selected materials and adapted to provide 100% technical performance in each type of activity and for each type of need;
  • Every detail in terms of design, manufacturing and selection of materials is aimed at making a comfortable and durable boot.

To ensure that the quality of our products meets the levels we have defined and target, we operate with a series of external and internal quality controls. We monitor both the quality and performance of our products, as well as the manufacturing processes.

Testing of new materials

Every time we incorporate new materials, we commission independent laboratories such as INESCOP the task of carrying out all the necessary tests to verify that this material meets our requirements for resistance, durability, breathability, water repellency, etc.

Bestard Test Team of expert advisors

A series of prototypes of the new boot are sent to expert mountaineers, who subject them to real-life tests of functionality, durability, comfort, etc. If technical or quality defects are found, the boot will be modified until we arrive at the boot we want.

Collaboration with WL GORE

All new products featuring the Gore-Tex® lining and the corresponding logo must be tested and certified by the Gore laboratory. Both the boot and all its components must meet minimum requirements for durable waterproofing, breathability, abrasion resistance, and more. For example, one of the many tests Gore performs on new models in its German laboratories is the gait simulator, which accurately mimics the process of walking in rainy conditions. Each boot must perform a minimum of flexes in the water while electronic sensors detect any anomalies, moisture inside the boot, etc., to determine that the construction and materials maintain their durable waterproofing function even after prolonged use.
