The number of corcinos taken from their mothers is increasing

To date, thousands of corcinos have been taken to private homes or wildlife recovery centers. Unfortunately, almost all of them die, due to the difficulty of breeding in captivity. Furthermore, if they survive, they adapt to humans, making reintroduction into their natural environment impossible. In the case of males, according to Florencio A. Markina (president of the ACE), they can even attack humans by losing their fear.

Corcino Project

Given this increase in cases, an awareness campaign has been carried out since 2015 in which it is communicated that corcinos should not be collected, especially aimed at hunters and hikers, who are the most in the countryside and encounter this situation. . This initiative of the Spanish Roe Deer Association aims to show the danger that humans taking them out of the field poses to baby roe deer.

It may seem that they are abandoned, but their mother watches them closely, she herself has deposited them among the grasses to protect them from predators such as wolves or foxes. From time to time the doe visits them to make sure they are doing well and to nurse them. The corcinos remain in their hiding place until they are strong enough to follow their mothers through the mountains.

Towards December, the embryos implant in the uterus and begin their development until the birth of the young in April or May, when there is a greater abundance of vegetation and they can be hidden more easily. That is why the campaign begins with the start of the roe deer lambing under the motto “If you take it, it will die.”

What should you do if you find a baby roe deer?

Do not pick it up, as we have explained previously, it is most likely to die.

Don't touch it, you can impregnate it with your scent and make it easier for predators to see it or for its mother not to recognize it.

Be careful with pets, they can cause some discomfort if you take them loose outside the marked paths.

If you are a farmer, stay alert during mowing and other agricultural work. There are numerous roe deer that die when they are among the crops.
